
The journey from La Paz to Coroico it’s wonderful. It has spectacular views.
It starts at 3.800 meters above sea level, and goes up to the top (la cumbre) of the Cordillera Real, with its snow peacks and black stones, at 4.500 meters. From where you descend easily by the wide and asphalted new road between the fogy jungle, for mountains and green valleys, typical view of the Yungas, Coroico, is located up the hill in one side of the Uchumachi mountain and surrounded by coffee plants, citrics and woods.
There is plenty of option of how to get to Coroico: by car, with private or public transport, walking through the famous Choro trek, the Sandillani road, the Ecovia, and by biking tour.
The public transport
Departs from Ex-gas station, in the suburb of Villa Fátima in La Paz. The minibuses or minivans to Coroico´s bus Terminal depart every hour from the transport agencies Totai, Yungueña and Palmeras.
They don`t have a schedule, they depart as soon as they are full. The first minibus departs at about 8:00 AM and the last at 19:00 PM.
The minibuses are for 14 passengers and they charge 15 BS (aprox. 2 U$) for the ticket on week days. And in weekends they charge 18. - BS. The minivans, are comfortable and faster it take´s 7 passengers and delays 2, 30 hours to get to Coroico and they Charge 25, - BS (aprox. 3, 5 U$.-).
The all trips are by the wide and asphalted new road.
On the way back: the minibuses and minivans depart every hour or every half an hour from Coroico´s bus terminal as soon as it gets full.
The old road, also called the Death road by the travel agencies in order to attract adventurer young men for the biking tour. It’s beautiful too. It is still open and is used by the biking tour travel agencies which they organize every day.
Private transport:
the travel agency La Maison de la Bolivie, which makes the reservations for Eco-Lodge Sol y Luna, also offers private transport, for single person or groups; it’s a comfortable, fast and gate to gate service. Call at 22444884, or mobil 73731232, ask for David.
The Inca trail starts at La Cumbre and the walkers walk down beyond the faraway valleys and reach Coroico in three days. For the other trails look on the guide books, web page for Coroico or ask at the tour operators in La Paz.
Beware: most of the time, the road by night gets cloudy and foggy or could be snowing.
That’s why we recommend you should start your trip before sunset. In the southern Hemisphere the summer season gets dark at 8 PM and in winter seasons its dark at 7 PM. |
